United Nations awards Gaia for promoting and applying Chemical Leasing

Gaia received a highly respected international award for consulting in the development of an innovative and sustainability enhancing business model, chemical leasing.

Gaia was awarded a silver medal in the “Consulting Services” category in the competition organised by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), one of the leading international fora for chemical engineering and environmental protection. The Global Chemical Leasing Award Ceremony will take place 19 June in Frankfurt, Germany, within the framework of the ACHEMA congress. Applications for the Award were obtained from 12 countries.

Gaia has helped Cabot Specialty Fluids to identify and quantify the potential benefits their product has for health, safety and environmental (HSE) impacts and to apply these potentials into a practical cost evaluation model, BrineWise™.

“The silver medal is a great honour for Gaia and a high-level international recognition for our expertise. The award shows the value of Gaia’s work for a cleaner and safer world. Leasing is a true win-win business model. It has a large potential to save the chemical user’s money, and it actively promotes a more sustainable use of chemicals”, says Ylva Gilbert, Business Director of Gaia.

“Since 2002, Gaia has supported the chemical leasing operations of Cabot Specialty Fluids, compiling HSE and economic benefit information that Cabot uses to promote and expand the leasing of cesium formate brine in oil and gas well construction operations. The quality of all work performed by Gaia has always been outstanding. The tool developed by Gaia helps Cabot’s clients to make enlightened and informed decisions”, says Siv Howard, Research and Development Manager of Cabot Specialty Fluids.

Chemical leasing has proven to bring economic and environmental benefits to participating companies and allows them to be more competitive. It leads to better operational environmental performance through reductions in emissions, discharges and waste. Chemical leasing encourages more efficient use of raw materials, water and energy, and minimises the overall life cycle impacts of chemicals through design of products with excellent environmental performance and cost-efficiency.

The Global Chemical Leasing Award is jointly sponsored by UNIDO, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management and the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
