Reducing our climate impact is an ongoing task at Gaia. In 2019 the entire life cycle of energy production was included in the carbon footprint calculation and GHG emissions were compensated two-fold.
Gaia is a climate positive company calculating and compensating its GHG emissions every year. When the GHG emissions from the operation of the company has been calculated it is possible to point out the largest emission sources and focus on reducing the emissions. Each year Gaia improves the accuracy of the calculation and extends the scope to include all significant emissions. For example, the upstream emissions of energy production, such as transmission losses, were added to the calculation in 2019.
“Gaia has calculated and offset its carbon footprint since 2007 and became climate positive since 2012. This is not the end of our learning. Each year we make efforts to better estimate our emissions, and address the significant emission sources, says Pasi Rinne.
In a growing company such as Gaia, the largest emissions that are increasing every year are coming from the business travel. These are the emissions we should focus on. This year’s pandemic and subsequent change to distance-working and virtual meetings have shown us all that we are capable to change our business and travel habits. Gaia supports working from distance, and avoids any travel when remote options are possible.
“Since few years Gaia has offered digital meeting and workshop tools. They are extremely effective, proven to be very valuable during the last months, and will continue to offer a realistic choice to normal meetings, tells Pasi Rinne.
The compensation method chosen for the year 2019 is a Gold Standard project in Ethiopia where 3.277 hectares of degraded native forests are restored. The project is creating new jobs and protecting native tree species in addition to storing a total amount of 1.052.183 tons of CO2 into the biomass. The actual benefits are therefore not limited to the positive climate impacts but are extended to the local community and the biodiversity. By supporting and enabling this project with 2.803 euros the generated 87,9 tons of GHG emissions in 2019 are compensated two-fold.
