The aim was to establish an innovative and replicable mechanism for financing clean energy technologies (CET) through microfinance. The target group was households and small and middle size enterprises.
Gaia developed the financing model, acted as a facilitator between microfinance institutions (MFIs) and technology providers, and was responsible for the overall project management. Gaia was supported by MicroEnergy International and Swan Management.
A business concept was established for three Ethiopian MFIs, with a total of 200 000 clients. The concept can be extended to other markets with similar needs. The entire supply chain for high-quality, clean energy technologies was developed for low-income markets. This includes logistics, design of credit products, post-sales services and monitoring.
