A case study on innovation ecosystems in a sustainable bioeconomy in Finland

Project goal

Understanding the innovation development pathways of cellulose-based bioproducts and biocomposites, as well as textiles, as new application areas for utilization of forest-based biomass. The study was part of a comparative OECD survey on bioeconomy development and related innovation policy in various countries.

Gaia's role

Gaia analyzed the innovation ecosystem, interviewed 20 Finnish organizations that are involved in the development of higher value-added applications basing on utilization of forest biomass, and produced recommendations on how innovations could be accelerated in the ecosystem.

The result

Recommendations on national actions to promote textile and bioplastic innovations, as well as supporting communications material were produced. The results were presented at the OECD.
