Planning of an energy efficient and climate friendly neighbourhood to Östersundom, Helsinki
A green urban neighbourhood for 50 000–80 000 residents, is being planned to Östersundom. Helsinki City Planning Department commissioned Gaia to study, what factors affect the carbon footprint of the Östersundom area under planning. (City of Helsinki, 2010)
Several alternative planning scenarios were compiled, that differed especially regarding building densities, the need to commute, and energy solutions in buildings. As an outcome, information on climate impacts of different planning alternatives scenarios were provided, and recommendations were given for the area’s land use planning.The project report is publicly available (in Finnish only) from the Helsinki City Planning Department website.
