As part of Finland's Strategic Programme for the Forest Industry, Gaia studied new ways to ensure the best possible added value of nation's strategic forest resources. (The ministry of Employment and the Economy of Finland, 2009-2010)

The study aimed to search for an action plan to enhance business growth and to define prerequisites for radical innovations in forestry. One starting point for the project was to assess the feasibility of business activation model for either as part of the Vigo-programme (www.vigo.fi) or in another applicable way.

The target groups of the study were newly starting companies and already stabilised small and medium sized companies. The study considered sectors with identified growth potential. These were wood construction, energy wood related business, service business and bio and chemical goods production (bio refineries) where forest resources are utilised.
