One billion dollar climate partnership on track

Indonesia and Norway formed a transformational partnership in 2010 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and peatland degradation in Indonesia. The partnership consists of Norway’s offer of one billion dollars to be paid against verified results, Indonesia’s commitment to cut its emissions, and regular review of progress by Gaia. The results so far suggest that significant greenhouse gas cuts are possible but require leadership, technical capacity and commitment to innovative solutions.

How will Finland succeed in a significantly warmer world?

The average global temperature may rise 4 degrees by the end of the century, if greenhouse gas emissions keep growing at current rate. In Finland, it would bring about a 6-degree temperature rise by 2100. If this is the case, global warming will threaten Finland’s prosperity, food provision and services and may cause social unrest, says a report produced by The Finnish Innovation Fund Sitra and Gaia Consulting.

Society’s Commitment to Sustainable Development engages the entire Finnish society

Gaia has worked with the Finnish Ministry of the Environment in preparing a new national Commitment to Sustainable Development, which was launched on December 3rd. The commitment enables the Finnish government and administration, along with Finnish companies, organizations, political and academic communities and individuals to make their own pledges to promote sustainable development.

Finnish Government Report on the Future, a unique effort to examine Finland’s future challenges and prospects, has been published. The report focuses on well-being through sustainable growth within a time-frame that extends to 2030. The Government Report on the Future is submitted to the Finnish Parliament once during each electoral period.

Gaia Biorefiner screens the sustainability of new bio-based products

Gaia Consulting launched today the Gaia Biorefiner, a service that screens the environmental sustainability of bioeconomy innovations, business ideas and investment opportunities. The service was launched at the leading European bioeconomy event, the European Forum for Industrial Biotechnology and the Biobased Economy, EFIB 2013, at Brussels. The Gaia Biorefiner has been piloted with the Finnish Bioeconomy Cluster FIBIC. The service aims to become the globally most relevant method for assessing the sustainability of biomass-based value chains.

Baltic Sea Deserves Better Protection

In 2007, all Baltic Sea countries joined Baltic Sea Action Plan (BASP) to achieve a healthy marine environment. The results are disappointing: all countries are behind agreed schedules despite of the urgency, political commitment and applicable skills. WWF has now released a report on BASP implementation based on analysis made by Gaia.

Gaia and partners to provide much needed information on climate finance

Gaia has partnered with the Overseas Development Institute to look closely at climate finance. Tracking climate finance flows will help patch significant knowledge gaps, monitor climate finance more efficiently as well as mobilize and direct funding.
