Itämeren kaloilla voitaisiin myös korvata ulkomailta tuotua kalaa. Pienistä särkikaloista ja silakasta voitaisiin myös valmistaa kalanrehua, jolloin rehukaloja ei tarvitsisi rahdata maailman meriltä.
