Distributed Bio-Based Economy – Driving Sustainable Growth (englanniksi)
Gaia's recent scenario report on bio-economy describes the structures of distributed bio-based economy in 2050. It shows that there will be a demand for sustainable local bio-economic solutions designed to improve energy and nutrient self-sufficiency. The transition from industrial production thinking to the smart management of natural resources will be an opportunity for Finland as a whole.(Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund, 2011).
The scenario report Distributed Bio-Based Economy – Driving Sustainable Growth for Sitra shows that bio-economy has great future potential for society and business. It challenges the centralised social model – sustainable future is created through local solutions.
According to the report, the future bio-economy will be glocal: both global and local. As a new kind of economic and social strategy, the bio-based economy could be a key in the fight against the challenges our society is facing, such as climate change. The world of bio-based economy is the world of opportunities for those who find alternative and innovative solutions and connect themselves with counterparts around the globe.
The report builds up a scenario for the year 2050 that is largely based on the distributed bio-based
economy. Several positive assumptions were made to concretise the vast potential of the distributed bio-based economy. In addition to the expert views of the authors, the report was largely based on studies on the distributed bio-based economy commissioned or conducted by Sitra. Other relevant material, such as OECD’s Green Growth Strategy (OECD 2011), was also used to cover the current and future developments comprehensively.
The study was prepared at the request from Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund´s Landmarks Programme (2010–2014). The Programme identifies future needs and seeks new ways for the countryside to respond to challenges related to climate change and the new faster-paced, mobile way of life. It accelerates profitable business based on local solutions of the green economy.
